BEL India develops tablet PC for Rs.3000

Bharat Electronics Limited, the state-run defense research arm has developed a tablet PC for Ministry of Rural Development's poverty survey. As pointed out by the Chairman and Managing Director of BEL, Mr. Ashwin Kumar Datt, the production of these poverty survey tablet PCs will fetch Rs 1,000 crore for BEL this year. Ashwin also added that the Bengaluru-based public sector defense electronics company will supply six lakh pieces this year.

Powered by the Android 2.2 version, the tablet comes equipped with solar-backed battery to allow data to be stored and uploaded in real time to a central server.

China Times report that Apple might be launching its much awaited iPhone5 somewhere around Mid-Sept 2011.

The prices of Nintendo 3DS are said to be slashed starting from August 12 2011 in the US, with a similar price drop in the other regions as well.

For those of the already existing Nintendo 3DS users, the company plans to keep them as well, with an offer to provide upto 20 games for free. Hope this can keep the Nintendo 3DS gamers from switching out to other platforms, atleast for a while!

NOKIA N900 VS SONY ERICSSON SATIO, WHAT'S THE BEST FOR YOU?!

Both Nokia and Sony Ericsson have announced about launching a couple of interesting phones soon.

Sony Ericsson will be launching its all new Sony Ericsson Satio Smartphone some time in September, while Nokia will go ahead with the launch of its first ever Maemo based Smartphone/Tablet - NOKIA N900 in the forthcoming Nokia World event due to be held in September/October 2009 .

Revelation of the specifications and video trailers of Sony Ericsson Satio and Nokia N900 have already caused quite a buzz among the gadget freaks and off late, I have been seeing many queries between the two from Smartphone enthusiasts. This prompted me to write a short comparison article between these two Smartphones. May be its too early to compare, but it can still give some insight into how each of these Smartphones fare over the other. With that, let me start the comparisons between certain features of Nokia N900 and Sony Ericsson Satio.

PROCESSOR

Taking about the processor, which forms the heart of any mobile handset, it is interesting to see that both Nokia N900 and Sony Ericsson Satio uses TI OMAP 3430 ARM Cortex A8 processor, running at 600 MHz!

Now thats a significant shift for both these smartphones from their predecessors, which were all mostly based on ARM11 core processors. ARM Cortex A8 core can give tremendous boost to the overall performance of the handsets, due to an increase in their inline L1, L2 caching capacity, as well as due to the increase in pipe-lining stages found in this ARM Cortex A8 core!

In addition to this, TI has done a tremendous job in including Power VRSGX GPU core with Open GL ES 2.0 support for "Smart Pixels", thereby giving greatest power for rendering videos and graphic support for games in each of these smartphones.

But in terms of the games, it will be the Sony Ericsson Satio that might possibly win over Nokia Maemo. The reason being Sony Ericsson Satio running on Symbain Series 60 edition, game support for which already exists in the market. But in case of Nokia N900 that runs on Maemo which is fairly new, it would be unfair to expect something like that at this early stages!

In short, Satio might win in terms of utilizing the underlying hardware as compared to Nokia N900, with some interesting graphics applications support. So, if you are a game freak, you may need to think on this before deciding on Nokia N900.

CAMERA

Next thing to compare might be the camera support. Nokia N900 comes with a pretty decent 5 Mega Pixel camera with dual flash supprt and Carl Ziess lens, one of the best optical lens for cameras around the world. But in spite of this, its the Sony Ericsson Satio that steals the show with 12 Mega Pixel Camera, auto-focus, xenon flash and video LED light support!

So again, if you are one of those photography enthusiast, consider going for Sony Ericsson Satio!

DISPLAY

In terms of display, Nokia N900 beats Sony Ericsson Satio easily with its impressive 800x400 resolution 3.5" resistive touch screen (Find out the difference between resistive and capacitive touch screen here), while the Sony Ericsson Satio comes with a 360x640 resolution 3.5" touch screen. So, if you are more interested in watching videos, browsing the internet, checking mails, Nokia N900 can please you much better than Sony Ericsson Satio.

SIZE

Nokia N900 weighs 181 gms and is 113 cubic cm in volume
Sony Ericsson Satio weighs 126 gms and has a dimension of 112 x 55 x 13 mm.

CONNECTIVITY

Though Nokia N900 is depicted as a Tablet PC more than as a Smartphone, both Nokia N900 and Sony Ericsson features almost identical connectivity support.

Nokia N900 connectivity includes HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPRS, EDGE, BLUETOOTH, aGPS, FM TRANSMITTER & RECEIVER, MICRO USB.
On the other hand, Sony Ericsson Satio supports HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPRS, EDGE, BLUETOOTH, aGPS, FM RECEIVER & MICRO USB.

MEMORY

Nokia N900 impresses the most when it comes to memory capacity.
Nokia N900 has 256 MB RAM and a whopping 32 GB pemanent storage. It also provides an external microSD card memory slot for additional memory!
On the other hand, Sony Ericsson Satio comes with 128 MB of internal memory and an 8GB microSDCard included with the box. This micro SDCard can further be expanded upto 32 GB, but still, falls shorts in front of Nokia N900 in terms of the internal memory.

To summarize, Nokia N900 seems to be perfect for someone who is more into internet browsing, for one who likes to play videos on his gadget.

On the other hand, Sony Ericsson Satio is more of a entertainment gadget, used for multimedia playback.

So what you want to choose depends on what you want to do with it!

BOLT MOBILE WEB BROWSER is from Cambridge, Massachusetts based Bitstream, a company best known for it's digital fonts and font rendering software.

Bitstream is not new to the browser field, they also produce the ThunderHawk web browser for Windows Mobile and Symbian. Bolt web browser, like ThanderHawk (and Opera Mini, Skyfire, UCWEB and Teashark), is a server based browser meaning that much of the page rendering is done in the cloud and the browser is a relatively "thin" client application. ThunderHawk is a $50/year subscription product but Bolt web browser is free.

Bolt mobile web browser is written in Java ME like Opera Mini and according to Bitstream can run on "nearly all" Java based handsets that support MIDP 2 and CLDC 1.0.

The only handsets Bitstream specifically says Bolt mobile web browser will not run on are ones using the Palm OS. Blackberries and "selected" Windows Mobile handsets are specifically mentioned as supported.

Nokia today officially announced the launch of its first Linux based Phone/Tablet PC called the Nokia 9000.

Nokia N900 will run on Maemo 5 Linux platform and is mostly concentrated towards high internet access capabilities. Nokia 9000 will soon be succeeding Nokia N97 model which again was focused towards high speed internet accessibility.

Some of the feature of Nokia N900 include 3.4" WVGA touch screen, 32 GB built-in memory with expandable memory slot, GPS, WLAN and comes with a 5 Mega Pixel Camera powered by Carl Zeiss Optical Tessar lens. Nokia N900 is powered by TI OMAP 3430 processor, which follows the ARM Cortex A8 architecture, the same as found in the latest iPhone 3GS!

Both iPhone 3GS and Nokia N900 runs at a similar speed of around 600 MHz. Though soon there will be many other handsets slated to come out with a much more higher powerful 1 GHz processors (Like the Qualcomm Snapdragon, Nvidia Tegra, Samsung Hummingbird), Nokia N900 can still steal the show due to its great design and Maemo's power!

Samsung S5230 is one of the most affordable touch screen phone among the other currently available mobile phones in the market. In terms of its form factor, it closely resembles LG Cookie KP500 in a way.

The Samsung S5230 is a stylish handset which runs on TouchWiz User Interface (Proprietary UI from Samsung) and even has the capability to read your written words!

Samsung S5230 supports GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 on 2G network.

It has a 3 inch touch screen display with 240 x 400 pixels resolution and bears close resemblance to most other touch screen display phones by Samsung in its characteristics. Samsung S5230 comes with 3 seperate home screens where in you can place your favourite widgets, organising them at your will. It also has a bunch of preloaded widgets, including ones to deliver Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Flickr and Picasa functionality that are no more than simply shortcuts to the corresponding websites, but there is one that allows you to download and install additional widgets.

Talking on the emory side, Samsung S5230 comes with a 50 MB Built-In memory along with an external memory slot that can support upto 8GB microSD Card.

Samsung S5230 boasts a variety of multimedia features, with a good music player, with options to filter songs by artist, composer, album, genre etc. It also comes with a 3 mega-pixel camera and video recording supporting QVGA at 5fps.

It also has access to built-in Google Search and Google’s Gmail mailing service, as well as Bluetooth 2.1 for wireless hands free headsets.

On the downside, battery life of Samsung S5230, even though it was slated as 10 hrs of continuous talk time, we could not really see such a performance. With an hour of calling, a little bit of web surfing (with some pics uploaded to websites) and some music play, battery began to die by 6 Hrs and demanded a recharge.

To summarize, Samsung S5230 is a brilliant phone for its Touch Screen features and excellent picture quality (even though it bears only 3 MP camera), but you can consider buying it if you dont mind recharging your cell everyday for daily usage scenario!

Nokia recently announced the launch of its lower ended full touch screen mobile phone, Nokia 5230.

Nokia 5230 gets cheaper by reducing features such as removal of Wi-Fi support, downgrading camera to 2MP resolution.

iPhone 4G may run at 1GHz !!

Recently, Samsung and Intrinsity jointly announced the launch of a fastest ARM Cortex A8-based processor, clocking at a speed of 1GHz - code named "Hummingbird".

According to analysts, Samsung Hummingbird can be easily adopted to the existing iPhone 3GS architecture without requiring any major modifications. Since Apple has been using Samsung's processors, we can expect the next generation iPhone 4GS running on Samsung Hummingbird.

With other handset manufacturers already going in for a high rated processor either from Qualcomm (Snapdragon processor, 1GHz) or from Nvidia (Tegra processor, 1 GHz), we guess it might not be of any surprise to see iPhone opting for Samsung Hummingbird for its next generation.

But on the other hand, it is interesting to think about Apple recently acquiring PA Semiconductors.With this acquisition, will Apple continue to use Samsung's processors or is it having other plans of its own, for the next iPhone 4GS?

The chase is on!

Microsoft is continuously updating its Windows Mobile 6.5 Operating System and with a video leak of its recent Build release of 23030, we can see that it is trying to catchup with all the iPhone fetures.

Unfortunately, what we see in this video confirms that there are many traces of Touch Pro 3D. But it is interesting to know if it is indeed that of HTC or if Microsoft has really changed the User interface dramatically for its upcoming Windows Mobile 6.5 release!

Sony Ericsson Satio (aka IDOU) is another latest high ended mobile phone slated to be launched in September 2009.
